Coach
House
Role: Lead Architect
Completed 2005
The Coach House, completed in 2005, illustrates the practice’s sensitive renovation of historic buildings.
It is an elegant timber and glass extension of an Arts & Crafts coach house in The Cotswolds. The project is the first phase of a larger domestic renovation project which includes the renovation of the principal property on the estate, Court Essington.
The extension onto the Coach House is strikingly modern, simplifying the forms of the existing building. The design places emphasis on the views of the surrounding countryside, with full height glazing – supported by a series of 150mm sections of solid oak – cantilevered off the amended floor slab. A 20sqm decked roof terrace above serves the new guest suite on the first floor. At the front of the house the garage has been removed to provide space for a new Calacatta limestone kitchen. The garage door has been replaced with a picture window, creating a vista through the house to the spectacular grounds to the rear.
