Treffen Hotel Doha
Treffen Hotel Doha represents a complete reinvention of the former M Grand, an iconic 1970s building embedded in the city’s urban memory. Archer Humphryes was appointed as both architect and interior designer, with a brief that went far beyond refurbishment. The ambition was to transform a closed, conventional hotel into a sociable cultural hub for a new generation of guests, positioned in deliberate contrast to the neighbouring luxury hotels such as the Park Hyatt and Mandarin Oriental. Rather than competing through formality or exclusivity, Treffen was conceived as a more open, expressive and urban proposition—one that reflects contemporary Doha and the evolving expectations of international and local travellers alike.
From the outset, the project was grounded in careful reuse and repurposing of the existing landmark structure. Sustainability was embedded in the concept, with the retained fabric of the 1970s building providing both environmental and cultural value. Archer Humphryes reworked the architecture and interiors to create what we define as an urban resort: a hotel that combines the energy of the city with moments of leisure, escape and social exchange. Key interventions include a dramatically reimagined lobby conceived as a central gathering space, rooftop hospitality venues with expansive views, a pool bar, extensive spa facilities, and the integration of retail and cinemas to activate the building throughout the day and evening. Each element was designed to encourage movement, interaction and a sense of discovery, reshaping how the building is experienced by guests and the wider city.
Crucially, Treffen Hotel Doha was not simply a design project but the creation of an entirely new hotel brand and identity for a new market. Archer Humphryes worked closely with international experts Deloitte on brand positioning and strategy, a collaboration that spanned over two years and informed every aspect of the architecture and interior design. This process ensured that spatial decisions, guest experience and commercial performance were fully aligned. Treffen demonstrates Archer Humphryes’ ability to operate at the intersection of design, strategy and reuse—generating new hospitality concepts while respecting existing landmarks. The project stands as a model for how thoughtful transformation can extend the life of significant buildings, introduce fresh cultural energy, and establish confident new identities within established urban contexts.
